Short answer: I needed a powerful, flexible, small business accounting app that answered the needs of a freelancer.
Long answer: A couple years back, I lamented the sad lack of good accounting software for Macs. I had already been using the clunky and awful "Quickbooks Accounts for Mac" app for a few years (buying it only a few months prior to Quickbooks announcing they would no longer support, develop, or sell it) and I absolutely hated it from the start. Despite it being a very powerful application, it was horribly awkward, terribly designed, and the learning curve on it seemed ridiculously endless. Clearly, I needed something better.
I began searching for a replacement that would allow me to do all the things a freelance designer needs in a small business accounting app.- be able to create and send invoices in multiple currencies
- be able to handle multiple currencies and taxes
- be able to track business expenses, independently of invoices
- be able to generate annual/monthly reports
- be intuitive and extremely simple to learn (ie: have a short learning curve)
- allow me to attach notes to each invoice (eg: invoice terms, etc..)
- be affordable
- include some kind of time-tracking if possible
- preferably be a web app (if YES: it should work in any browser; if NO: it should have a fully supported Mac version)
- and hopefully, an app that developers were going to continue supporting for several years to come.
